Canyon Diablo is the prototypical American meteorite from Meteor Crater, Arizona. The crater itself measures about 4,000 feet across and 600 feet deep. "Found" in 1891, Meteor Crater was initially thought to have formed from a huge underground steam explosion, however thanks the to work of Daniel Barringer, a mining engineer, Meteor Crater was finally recognized as being the result of a large meteorite impact approximately 50,000 years ago! |
